My family paid an annual fee to join one of these libraries where we could borrow books so new that they had not yet appeared at the local branch of the public library.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04679352468526776274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1131115381814003042005-11-04T14:43:00.000+00:002005-11-04T14:43:00.000+00:00The world is constantly going to hell in a hand ba...The world is constantly going to hell in a hand basket, init?
However, a basket, if suspended from a nice, colourful balloon, is an interesting way to observe the process of sky falling...Bernitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05264585685253812090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1130945282869071342005-11-02T15:28:00.000+00:002005-11-02T15:28:00.000+00:00No longer sure about this. I've just looked for "grumpy old bookman ginny good" on Google, and got the same two references offered by the blog search facility.

Could it be that this facility simply goes to Google for whatever you're after, and leaves out everything which doesn't link to the GOB?

That would be easy, lazy, and still worse than useless.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1130943966169195502005-11-02T15:06:00.000+00:002005-11-02T15:06:00.000+00:00Plus ca change . . .But my comment relates not spe...Plus ca change . . .

But my comment relates not specifically to today's entry, but to this blog in general (and by implication to all other blogs using the same machinery).

Your Grumpiness remarked on October 17 that the search facility (to be found top of page) had been "improved" to the point at which it no longer worked.

Dead right. If you look up "copyright", for example, you get nineteen references going all the way back to May of this year. But many other references should appear, going back much further. Why don't they?

I looked up "copyright" as a test case, having found only two references for what I was really after, namely Ginny Good.

Of course, you have no control over the machinery which drives this blog, but have you taken the matter up with those who do? If I didn't know that the search facility was useless, then I would conclude that the GOB has mentioned copyright only nineteen times, and Ginny Good only twice -- which, come to think of it, makes the search facility literally worse than useless.

As you remarked on October 17, the way to search the GOB is in fact to go to Google and key in "Grumpy Old Bookman" plus whatever it is that you are looking for. It won't do.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
