Although his ot...Not available from Amazon.co.uk... Although his other books are there...

Nice to see SF gets a review. I can never work out why SF and Fantasy is looked down on by press and writers... Mr Pratchett seems to do all right by it and has a legion of fans... As do other "genre" writers.

But still the press either doesn't review these books or does so in a very sniffy fashion, in the same way the BBC will chortle their way through a Trek convention - where people turn up dressed as their favourite character - and in the same breath doff their caps and pay homage to a Hardy convention - where everyone dresses as their favourite character...

Even writers seem to distance themselves. JK once said she was unaware she was writing fantasy with HP - to which Pratchett replied that the unicorns, flying broomsticks and magical powers should have perhaps been a clue.

And at a writers gathering I heard Ishiguro claim that his book "Never Let Me Go" - a book on clone farms set in the near future - was not SF... But then if it was, I guess he wouldn't have been shortlisted for the booker... Or am I suffering reverse snobbery here?

Anyways, if someone can tell me where I can source Ian R. MacLeod's new book, I will gladly give it a spin. Reading the Various Haunts of Men at the moment, and I have to say it's not really doing it for me.Paul Ekerthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16777437817571904991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1161110515008206892006-10-17T19:41:00.000+01:002006-10-17T19:41:00.000+01:00I enjoyed your thoughtful and thorough review! If I can add just one small item of correction, we do fulfill orders for individual customers from outside the United States; we are only unable to sell The Summer Isles to the trade (bookstores and libraries) outside the USA. I don't mean to discourage anyone from purchasing from the Wrigley-Cross bookstore, however. Paul is one of a handful of independent bookstore owners who have ordered from us from the beginning, and we link to Wrigley-Cross' site from our own and give them our full support. - Tiffany Jonas, Publisher, Aio PublishingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1161109234427975062006-10-17T19:20:00.000+01:002006-10-17T19:20:00.000+01:00When last visited ten days ago, Paul Wrigley and D...When last visited ten days ago, Paul Wrigley and Debbie Cross were doing well and still enthusiastic abou their business. Having closed their inner eastside Portland store last year, they've been operating out of the basement of their home in Gresham, and of course, on the web at ABE and Biblio. They still carry more small press titles than any other dealer in the state.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6656468.post-1161091234294698632006-10-17T14:20:00.000+01:002006-10-17T14:20:00.000+01:00While I've always been intimidated by trying to un...While I've always been intimidated by trying to understand just the politics of the Balkans in that period, this sounds like a fascinating book. Given my lean pocketbook (and fear of Balkan politics), I have nonetheless asked our county library to order me a copy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
