Rarity from the Hollow by Robert Eggleton is the most enjoyable science fiction novel I have read in several years. Who could think of an intergalactic handbook for entrepreneurs? Who could turn a tree-hugger into a paranormal event of death-defying significance? Who could create characters so believable, so funny, so astonishingly human (and not)?
Robert Eggleton, that’s who.
I put this book on my IPhone, and it followed me everywhere for several days. Strangers smiled politely at my unexpected laughter in the men’s room toilet stall. They looked away as I emerged, waving the IPhone at them as if it might explain something significant.
Oddly, the novel explains a great deal that has become significant in our society. Rarity from the Hollow is satire at its best and highest level. It is a psychological thriller, true to traits of mankind (and other species). It is an animal rights dissertation (you will laugh when you understand why I write that). It celebrates the vilest insect on earth (make that Universe).
The characters created by Robert Eggleton will bug your brain long after you smoke, uh, read the final page. Thanks for the laughs, the serious thoughts, the absolute wonder of your mind, Mr. Eggleton. A truly magnificent job.

Looking back, this book reminds me of ‘Slaughterhouse Five’ or ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’: it follows a character who is enduring a traumatic series of events, and can only really cope with those experiences by developing another world that overlays this one and provides some way to explain or escape, as a situation warrants. If this story were presented in a purely factual way, it would be nauseating to look at directly; perhaps it is only through this fictional lens that we can face the ugliness that Lacy Dawn endures, as well as the real children who suffer similar fates.

The naked, genderless android, Dot-com, who lives in a ship in a cave, told her so. Add her abusive father, her weak-willed mother, a sexually-abused ghost for a best friend, trees that talk to her, a dog that can communicate telepathically with cockroaches and so much more.
There is so much to this story, and its writing is so unblinkingly honest; Eggleton spares us nothing in his descriptions of her father beating her and her mother, the emotions that the mother and daughter go through, the dark creeping insanity that eats away at her Iraq-veteran father, and the life in general of people too poor, too uneducated to escape.
In part, it is a grueling exposition of what children endure when being physically and emotionally abused. But don't think you're going to be reading something harsh and brutal and tragic. This book is laugh-out-loud funny at times, satiric of almost everything it touches upon. The characters from the Hollow and from the planet Shptiludrp (the Mall of the Universe) are funny almost to the point of tears.

I was drawn into the story right from the beginning. This piece of speculative fiction is nothing like anything I’ve read before. It faces reality head-on while also pursuing themes that are outlandish in the realm of reality. Yes, there are some references to sexuality and abuse but the author makes it clear that it isn’t a book for children. This book has a lot of merit. In the beginning, it is very serious. As it progresses, it becomes somewhat satirical. It hammers home some truths which society tries to hide behind overt niceties. It makes the reader reflect, it makes the reader think over their own perception of the society. DotCom’s entry into the book gives it a new dimension. Some humor too seeps into the story because of DotCom’s presence and the ventures attempted by him and Lacy. The narrative technique is brilliant and it certainly helps the reader in getting involved. I was amazed when the story ended—Amazed at the realistic descriptions of situations that a child might find herself in; amazed by how the author has aptly mingled tragedy with humor. I was very satisfied with the entire novel and I’m definitely going to give it five stars. I would recommend it to people who sympathize with the causes of children who suffer silently in some corner. Gazing out of my window into the vast darkness of the sky, I am struck by the brilliance of tonight's full moon—tonight's blue moon. Sometimes I greatly regret it and wonder, Why must you be so curious? This time though, I have no regrets, for I found Rarity from the Hollow, by Robert Eggleton, to deliver an entertaining acerbic satire of modern society, whilst still gently reminding us of many core values.
Rarity from the Hollow is a children's story for adults. It is a speculative fiction that touches on supernatural, fantastical, and futuristic elements, to create a darkly comedic novel that focuses on tough social issues such as domestic violence and sexually and emotional abuse. I would caution that this is not a light read, and not for the faint of heart. I tend to shy away from books that are emotionally heavy. But, I was intrigued and stepping out of my comfort zone, remember? Plus, I was promised that this story ends well.
For Lacy Dawn, life in The Hollow is challenging. With an abusive father, a nearly invisible mother, and a dead best friend, she’s certainly seen more than her share of tragedies. Things begin to look up for her after she befriends DotCom—a semi-organic robot who helps her “cure” her parents. In exchange, he wants her to save the Universe.
The story is captivating from the start with a very real and jaw-dropping conversation between Lacy Dawn and Faith (said dead best friend). This immediately sets the tone of the story and paves the way for many mature topics that are woven intimately throughout. Mr. Eggleton offsets some of the heaviness with moments of humor, love, and kindness through Lacy Dawn's adventures. Lacy Dawn seems like a typical Appalachian eleven-year-old girl; bright, resourceful, living in poverty, and trying desperately to "fix" her mother and father. Her father, Dwayne, is a war veteran who suffers from PTSD and prefers to self-medicate; when triggered, he becomes violent and Lacy Dawn and her mother become the target of his rage. Lacy Dawn's mother, Jenny, does her best to protect her daughter; however, she is worn down from years of abuse and sacrificing her dreams to take care of her daughter and husband.
Despite outward appearances, Lacy Dawn is a very unique and gifted child. She spends most of her free time talking to the trees in the Hollow; playing with her deceased friend, Faith, who dwells in the trees; and learning all she can from her anatomically incomplete and semi-organic boyfriend, DotCom. After helping Lacy Dawn implement a treatment plan for her parents, DotCom reveals his true purpose; he was sent to help Lacy Dawn evolve, and then recruit her for a mission to save the universe.
While DotCom has no idea what she is supposed to do to save the universe, the pair decide to let her family and Tom, family friend/local entrepreneur/drug dealer, in on the secret. With the help of friends, family, and the family's dog; Lacy Dawn and DotCom come up with an ingenious plan to save the universe.
When Eggleton requested a review of Rarity from the Hollow, I was hesitant to accept. I usually do not read or review books that discuss child abuse or domestic violence; however, I was intrigued by the excerpt and decided to give it a shot. I am glad that I took a risk; otherwise, I would have missed out on a fantastic story with a bright, resourceful, and strong protagonist that grabbed my heart and did not let go. It is not every day that I find a kindred spirit in a book, but I found one in Lacy Dawn! I admired her courage, her imagination, and her intelligence; I could go on for days about the excellent job that Eggleton did in developing Lacy Dawn's character, but I won't. What I will say is that even if you do not fully understand her perspective, you will admire her spunk.
I also greatly admire Eggleton's whimsical, witty, and understanding approach to sensitive and serious subject matters: child abuse, child poverty, domestic violence, PTSD, drug use, and alcoholism. Eggleton's matter-of-fact and irreverent tone about these subject matters conveys the gravity of the family's situation without sending readers into a spiral of suicidal depression, or being insulting.
Rarity from the Hollow brilliantly combines social commentary in a fantastical and intricate science fiction setting that readers can understand and relate to. It is one of those books that if it does not make you think, you are not really reading it.

There is definitely a lot of strangeness in this book, but all of that led to wonderful insights and even better characters. Lacy Dawn is irresistibly intriguing. I love her acceptance, heart, willingness to take on challenges and honesty. Her growing relationship with DotCom was both fascinating and sweet.
DotCom’s transformation was probably the best part of this story for me, as he changes to a ‘real boy,’ the emotions and new sensations that DotCom was feeling as a human were hilarious. The story really picked up for me when Lacy Dawn received her mission on Shptiludrp, an exciting and zany planet whose only hope is a dysfunctional family, their dog and an android who is turning into a man.”

“The problem with loving a specific genre of books is that sooner or later you will find that you've read it all. For months at a time it will seem that every other book you pick up is just another dystopian novel set upon a craft hurtling through space or just another super-human story with a protagonist subjected to a lifetime of intrusive and unnecessary tests. It is very rare indeed that a book stops you in your tracks and tells a story that is completely unique.
Robert Eggleton's Rarity From the Hollow is just such a book. If I had to try describe it, I'd say it is a cross between an episode of Doctor Who and Jeff Noon's Vurt. It is a trippy and surreal story about a girl from a severely unprivileged environment who falls in love with an extra-terrestrial android who, it turns out, has genetically modified her ancestors since pre-historic times to breed the girl who will eventually save the universe.
Lacy Dawn is the girl and DotCom is the android who has been reprogramming Lacy Dawn's mind for years, training her to become the saviour she is destined to become. Neither counted on falling in love with the other.
‘Rarity from the Hollow’ is funny and irreverent, but beneath the hallucinatory story of visits to shopping planets and interstellar shopping games, there is a profound critique of social problems, substance abuse, child sexual abuse and child murder that is quite eye opening. It is very, very good. I recommend ‘Rarity from the Hollow’ to anybody who likes a side helping of the lunatic with their science fiction and fantasy.”

This book is like an exposed nerve, it can get intense. I personally loved it. I love books like this, the kind that make you cry because, you know that there are some things that are real and can't be changed. Getting into to the more technical parts of the book, the character building was superb, you really connect with the main character. The world building was a bit over detailed but still left some to the imagination, (this is a good thing.) Overall, this was well written in many ways, it had heart and love.

I can’t praise Robert Eggleton enough. He created something truly fantastic.
The writing is brilliant. It feels timeless, classic and mature in a way that would ensure its longevity if more people knew about it. I would even say it could be read in a college setting both for the craft itself and its unique brand of storytelling. The premise is brilliant and brought a distinctive approach to the adult-fairytale/modern-retelling sub-genre, and the story balances.
‘Rarity’ reminds me of Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,’ mixed with Douglas Adams’ ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,’ Eggleton has convinced me that such radically different story-telling styles can not only co-exist in a single book, but can actually play off each other brilliantly if balanced correctly. The believable struggle and darkness of the Hollow breaks your heart while the outlandish solutions to Lacy’s problems feel not only believable (by some stroke of genius on Eggleton’s part), but deserved and bright. In addition to being an expertly crafted story, “Rarity” did something that most pop fiction doesn’t usually do: It made me ask questions, both as a a writer and a reader. The fact that I was constantly questioning myself as both a consumer and producer of fiction as I read is what really makes me want to suggest this book.
If you like challenging books, questions, and a lot of zaniness, ‘Rarity from the Hollow’ is definitely worth a read.

“I've seen this book compared to many other works of literature, but I think ‘Rarity from the Hollow’ possesses its unique touch. This is the story of a little girl, Lacy, from a family that is about to break. Her father is a war veteran and suffers from the trauma of his past. His suffering echoes throughout the whole family, bringing it down with him. Meanwhile, the life of Lacy's friend gets a turn even for a worse. Lacy's life changes dramatically when she meets DotCom - a robot who has a very special mission for her.
This story is graced with a touch of fantasy and a fair share of episodes that make you reflect on some actual problems. I quite enjoyed the author’s SciFi imagination. He created such an entertaining world in outer space. While in the book there aren't space battles with all their flare, it is definitely filled with adventures and emotions. I really liked the relationships between the characters and how they evolved, especially Lacy and DotCom.
Along with the fantastic adventure, the book mentions some serious issues, like dysfunctional families and child abuse. The author stays subtle, so I don't think anyone will feel disturbed. Sex themes are mentioned mostly in the form of puns.
I had tons of fun with the family's adventures both on Earth and in space. What the alien world turned to be was an awesome surprise, but I shouldn't give spoilers. And it was so heartwarming to see love and friendship and care grow where there used to be ruins. It is a metaphor that even if it all depends on the person's inner desire and intent to make things better, it is more than okay to seek or accept help from outside, when you feel you can't make it on your own. I also want to say how much I liked the fact that Lacy's whole family takes part. In most books, in similar situations, we are more likely to see the main character cutting all connections and going on her/his own, but this novel brings the family together.
When Lacy's mission was uncovered, I thought it genius and it made me laugh out loud. In conclusion, Rarity from the Hollow was quite the unusual book. This novel is filled with wonders. It had original characters, interesting situations, episodes that brought a smile on my face and it also makes you think. I recommend it to fans of modern literature and sci-fi lovers who don't shy from more unusual storytellings.”

“I remember reading the blurb of this book, and the first words I muttered to myself were, ‘Oh, well then!’ Truth bombs are slipped in subtly into the narrative of this story, an ice-breaker between me and the book, and it happened when Lucy mentioned, ‘Complaining is like sitting in a rocking chair. You can get lots of motion but you ain't going anywhere.’
The story had a teeming number of undertones. It is very thoughtfully crafted and the humor keeps up with the allegories and the fictional devices of the plot. The crux is that the novel touched upon a lot of social taboos, issues and gives a push to the discourse for them, and even with the element of humor and satire, it manages not to offend the reader. That's a commendable feat in itself.

“A Great Story! Rarity from the Hollow is a great read and nothing like I expected! The author takes the reader on a fun filled journey. Before reading it, I had made a number of assumptions, based on the author’s background and the description of the book, but I was wrong on all counts. I thought that the story might get preachy and heavy handed in the delivery of its message. I thought that maybe this was just another author trying to copy Douglas Adams and the very successful, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. I could not have been more wrong on both counts. This book does deal with some very serious issues, including child abuse, poverty, lack of education and substance abuse. Instead of the story getting mired in the characters difficulties though, the author uses them to pull the reader in and create empathy. Mr. Eggleton has truly found his own style and voice as he weaves a wonderful tongue-in-cheek science fiction tale that is an absolute joy to read.”

Lacy Dawn isn’t your typical eleven year old kid. She has a lot of experiences under her belt, most of which aren’t great. Imagine her and her toothless mom being beaten to the pulp, everyday by her Gulf War veteran father. A father who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and deals with it by drinking, smoking weed and torturing his family. Not a sight that would likely appeal to you, eh?
How about this? Lacy Dawn can also talk to trees, have I mentioned that? Oh and the trees converse back at her, liked it’s the most normal thing they do. There’s Faith the ghost, too. And then there’s DotCom, an Android who’s slowly growing older like Lacy. Who Lacy introduces as her boyfriend, and who tells her, she’s destined to save the universe.
You see, life isn’t typical where Lacy Dawn is concerned. The constant abuse, heartbreaking experiences and other children’s account of maltreatment and sexual assault had struck me deep. This book is actually an eye-opener, revealing the harsh truth about Hollow and the real world, if you could see it that way. Robert Eggleton wrote a hard-hitting and amusing story that will make you realize life isn’t fair and there’s more to it than you’ll ever know.
This is a different kind of science-fiction story that will tug at your heartstrings.

Although this could be the setup for a rather dark and frightening novel, it soon explodes into satire. The android, named DotCom, turns out to be an employee of the distant planet Shptludrp, which is a giant shopping mall. Lacy Dawn has been bred throughout humanity’s existence to save the mall, which is the hub of all civilization. As Lacy Dawn matures, she convinces DotCom to heal her family so they can help her. This ends the abuse and they go on to establish themselves as champion traders, getting the best deals at the mall and selling their strange intergalactic wares in a big yard sale and on¬line as Rarity from the Hollow. This positions Lacy and her family to do what’s necessary to save the universe. All the while, she’s coming of age and bringing DotCom right along with her.
There’s a lot to like in this novel. Lacy is a clever and engaging character, who overcomes her difficult family situation, and her blossoming sexuality with homespun, common sense wisdom. She’s equally at ease talking to alien androids, her classmates, the trees, and ghosts. Eggleton makes an admirably smooth progression from the grim realities of Appalachian life to the broadly satirical look at the ‘alien’ economics of consumerism and how a smart kid can find solutions to problems entrenched man¬agement have made for themselves.
The novel is like the residents of the Hollow, imperfect but very much worth knowing. Lacy, her fam¬ily, and friends go on a journey that is both fun and thought-provoking.

Rarity From The Hollow is described as a Children’s Story for Adults, and that is pretty much the only description you can give it! It’s a science fiction adventure with some very serious adult themes mixed with comedy to keep it relatively light hearted.
The author keeps a balance between a completely surreal world and the real world. I love the continuity with the characters. The plot is really complex and in some places dark and it keeps you wanting to turn pages. I’ve found myself almost missing bus stops and coming close to hypothermia in the bath tub when reading this book because I was promising myself I’d stop at the next chapter and then carrying on regardless.
I’ll say this, if you like reading, read it. If you don’t, well I’m not sure why you’re here! Try something new, something out of your comfort zone, something like this!
I enjoyed this book, and I hope there will be more Adventures to come!
